Quartz is a natural stone consisting of 95% ground quartz. Different sizes of quartz particles are mixed with a small amount of resin and pigment, then baked, pressed, and polished to a high sheen that never dulls. Various-sized particles of pure quartz are placed into a mixer with polyester resins and pigment, then mixed to a dough. Then molded in a rubber mat. Next, it is sent to a vibro-compactor, where all air pockets are jiggled and compressed out to eradicate porosity. The slab is baked in a 225-degree oven for about 16 minutes, then cooled to room temperature before it is sanded and polished. Beacause of this manufacturing process quartz products are sometimes called "engineered stone".
Quartz's flexural strength is twice that of granite; its resistance to abrasion is higher than granite by 50%; its resistance to absorbing moisture is higher by eight times. Its physical chemistry is better, so it performs better. Quartz surfacing is used for both residential and commercial applications.
